I live in a third-world country where popular access to books and good education is extremely limited. The effects of this kind of lack of resources are all around me, and to think that the needs of American children going unmet in the same way I see it happening here pains me. So I jumped at this chance as an individual citizen to do my small part to help channel funds toward Title 1 schools.

The Darer: American author Kristy Dempsey has lived in Belo Horizonte, Brazil with her husband and three children since 1998. She misses her family, peanut butter and grits (like any self-respecting Southern girl should), but she loves eating pão de queijo and feijoada on a frequent basis.
